Fieldwork: Oblivion "I actually felt kind of bad about being evil today..."

I know, I know, I'm playing an MMO right now, too. I played a little Oblivion instead for free time and look what happens: schoolwork.

Jenkins et al. and the "Participation Gap": Let's Say Some More about Access

One of the three core concerns that Jenkins et al. believe we need keep in mind as we confront the challenges of 21st century media pedagogy is access: “How do we ensure that every child has access to the skills and experiences needed to become a full participant in the social, cultural, economic, and political future of our society?” (27).

Discussion Notes from “Confronting the Challenges of Participatory Culture” by Henry Jenkins with the MacArthur Foundation

Participation Gap:
-Student expectations: “New Media doesn’t perfectly reflect traditional papers”
-criticism of: knowing how to find info, not necessarily become an expert on everything
-civic literacy: need to know how to evaluate info when voting, participating, etc. This challenges students who feel like ENGL 106 is only good for future jobs, not for being a civic contributor or participant.

Final Project: games r srs bsns

I’ve been thinking a lot about the final project for this course and one recurring theme in our readings has been Huizinga’s magic circle. In particular it seems that the more we read the more the circle erodes (or, more precisely, the theorists erode it). Each reading successively attempts first to acknowledge the seminal nature of Huizinga and second to perforate the magic circle. Salen and Zimmerman misinterpret the complexity of the circle. Bogost contends there is a gap in the circle. Nardi argues that play is not always confined to the circle.

Backchanneling: The Safety Dance

Safe, dance!

[Spoken]
We can dance if we want to
We can leave your friends behind
'Cause your friends don't dance and if they don't dance
Well they're no friends of mine
I say, we can go where we want to
A place where they will never find
And we can act like we come from out of this world
Leave the real one far behind
And we can dance

[Sung]
We can dance if we want to
We can leave your friends behind
'Cause your friends don't dance and if they don't dance
Well they're no friends of mine
I say, we can go where we want to
