Most of my students didn't

Most of my students didn't even know what a blog was :-/ But I had a sad class this semester.

Did social networking kill the blog?

What Jess said about the nature of the comments on Facebook (e.g., "thumbs up," "I agree!") makes me think that blogs & online forums may be too agonistic for today's students.

I kinda wondered that as

I kinda wondered that as well, which actually makes the points that she is bringing up quite relevant, I think. If we are going to use blogs, and use them effectively, this is the kind of work that needs to be done.

sort of. we don't need to use

sort of. we don't need to use blogs, though, in order to create community. so the question is whether blogs can do what we want them to do better than in class.

blogs aren't necessarily meant to be "discussion forums." i mean, sometimes blogs call for response, but in general, blogs are one way declarations. not "discussions" like the backchannel we're having here.

the nature of asynchronous writing, I think, stops the effectiveness of a "discussion" objective.

"If we are going to use

"If we are going to use blogs. . ." is the key phrase, I think. There's certainly more work to done discovering, articulating, and using the affordances of various media in the comp. classroom. Why not skip over blogs and go directly to Facebook, for example?

What about Twitter?

What about Twitter?

Oh, yeah...

I've never Tweeted but I can't imagine formulating much of an argument in 140 characters or less.

I find the "surrendering control" part to be quite interesting.

The site that Karen is

The site that Karen is showing is totally the site I used to try to make a costume for the medieval fair in Norman, OK! It's fantastic! She teaches you how to make a corset frame out of duct tape! It is a great site!

And yes, I do love dressing up for medieval fairs. Are there any here in Indiana so I can have an excuse to make a dress?

off topic and on

There is the Fisher's Renaissance Fair in Indy!

Yeah, in the online historic costuming community, Jen Thompson's site is very popular and a respected source. That's one thing I hope to get into as I study non-academic experts is how they cite each other and build ethos.

lots of women were having "taylor turns 18" countdowns so that they could "lust without feeling guilty." he's 18 now, but he was only 17 when he first appeared in twilight.

Stick with it. I read the first one out of curiosity and then got hooked, but feel horribly, horribly guilty about it. Because they're all "Edward, the (WHITER THAN WHITE) gentleman, with perfect control of his appetites" and "Jacob (THE MYSTICAL MAGICAL NATIVE) werewolf/animal creature, who is unable to control his impulses and is thus dangerous" have a hereditary enmity between their species!!!!!

I just read the Golden

I just read the Golden Compass yesterday; I did it in one sitting, and got so addicted I had to run to B&N to get the next one in the series immediately when I finished. So it's not like I'm against young adult lit, but the twilight series just doesn't seem like my thing.

I hope the GC series doesn't have anything like that.

Golden compass series is really intense. I will be curious to hear your take once you get closer to the end... It gets intense.

So far it's incredibly intense. I get that weird feeling after a reading session where I look up and am totally dazed that i'm in a different world... and I kind of walk around in a daze fully expecting to see a daemon next to me.

Also, I'm not entirely sure it's settled yet.

I don't know... drinking blood is pretty animalistic.

oh. it is?

oh. it is?

I know. We could make a

I know. We could make a chart: vampires are white, artistic, in control, beautiful...I actually kinda sorta have a bunch of stuff sitting around that I need to pull together into a real paper on the representations of race and gender in Twilight (I will not even go into the "imprinting" because it makes me want to scream). I think it's my attempt to do penance for having read them in the first place.
