<random related thought> There is far too much objectification and degradation of women in games and the media that surround games. I find that this is even problematic in the way that the industry portrays "girl gamers", not only in advertisements (because we all stroke, lick, fondle our controllers sexually), but also in the gamers that they put forward as acceptable (think booth babes/booth representatives as well as game publisher sponsored clans). </random related thought>

I think you are right. As a female gamer, I find that representations of us online are more objectification than real equality. Women who game are not being represented in these types of pictures as someone other gamers would go to for advice on a game. They are pictured as sex objects and while I'd like to think of myself as attractive on some level, when I'm playing a game, I don't care whether or not I look good- I care whether or not I'm going to win and/or kick your ass. I don't think these images are healthy for women because they make it seem as though gaming is a strategy for attracting men, not something we do because we enjoy it!

I agree that if you have to ask if something is racist or offensive there's a good chance there is something wrong with it. And from what you've said about that game it does give ya that feeling. And I agree many people today don't pick up on subtle things and will take them at face value and without knowing or sense have misconceptions created in their minds. :(

I've lived a sheltered life and my sister was the one who taught me about white (male) privilege, I'm white male, and I try to keep it in mind whenever dealing with anyone and anything to understand different points of view, to know that I haven't experienced allot of things that many people deal with every day. I try to be understanding and treat people the way they want to be treated.

It's one of the reasons I love you site and podcasts so much because it keeps me thinking and hopefully make me a better person. So uh, thanks. lol

Is that me Sarah? If so then wah! I can't believe I won. I never win these sort of things haha.

My mom never was fond of playing with me and my brother. We usually exclusively played with each other and my dad sometimes jumped in (he's currently struggling through the Resistance series, making a fuss over how the "monkey" at the end of the third one was giving him trouble haha). About the only game my mom would play was, ironically, Super Monkey Ball haha.

To me, the "every voice matters" here serves a similar function as meritocratic claims do in these environments: they set up a systems that can function to exclude women and minorities under the guise of equality. In other words, they use equality as a kind of shield to hide behind. This seems even worse than saying nothing, because it 1) acknowledges that there should be more equality but 2) we don't actually care about making things more equitable, but want to cash in on pretending like we are. Like Castilla talks about in his work on meritocracies, these things obscure discrimination. In a company like Blizzard that is constantly under fire for sexist, racist, homophobic stuff, they are using this statement (methinks) to avoid actually, oh I don't know, hiring some women? That's why the group I'm using in this section, Gender at Work, is so persistent that there needs to be transparency and that policies like this should be specific and explicit.
But, that's my opinion. I don't really know enough about what happens behind the scenes to say one way or the other. But it certainly smells funny to me. And Blizzard's actions speak for themselves. Um, and yes, I would love to have you read some stuff! You may regret offering that!

I think this work on policy is really important--particularly when we consider that, indeed, policies are a discursive infrastructure for decision-making. I'm curious to see more about the ways that something like "Every Voice Matters" might /not/ be seen as equitable: is this used as a cover up for inequitable policy? or, rather, does it function as an inactionable policy--how does a policy like this do the work women often need it to do? what are the processes tied to the edict every voice matters?

Can't wait to read more, ALayne! Let me know if you need a set of eyes on any of the texts you're working on. ~KMoore

Happy Mother's Day! Great podcast. Gamer moms are awesome.

Yay sweet! Thanks. Me likey t-shirt. :D

That beginning was just too cute, cuteness overwhelming. XD

The angry orchard cider is pretty good, I've only had one but it's on my drinky list.

My mom Teren, doesn't really play any games by herself but she would always play with my sister and me like Mario, M.C. Kids and Bubsy and she would always listen to whatever rants or stories I had about whatever game I was playing. She still moves the controller and kicks her leg to get extra help on a big jump. lol

"And we’ve all been there, you’re going through amazing missions in the game and suddenly you have to escort some feeble NPC across battlegrounds ensuring their survival in the biggest warlike moments of the game. It’s always a hassle and the NPC does absolutely nothing to help you along the way, instead they usually end up wandering right into the line of fire and die, thus ending your mission and causing you to start over.

Here in lies why Elizabeth is a phenomenal AI. She never really gets in your way, when you’re low on items she throws them to you (including health, ammunition for the weapon you are using, Silver Eagles, and Salts), and she doesn’t need to be protected."

I think this basically sums up what makes me uncomfortable with the praise for Elizabeth as "A Great Female Character" or "Most Empowering." This sentiment seems to imply that a good female character is one who doesn't get in my way and isn't a chore to be around, but will instead get me things I need and who I can otherwise ignore during the action.

That's allot of things to overcome and you'd have to really love the work to put up with just half that stuff. Even if you removed the harassment issues it's still a bad deal.

You would think promotion of diversity would be even more important and crucial in a industry of creation. Different experiences and backgrounds to pull from to make better products. I might just be getting older but games coming out now seem staler and perhaps if the industry can fix these huge issues it could be a great injection of creativity and some new stories. This stuff blows my mind and makes me sad.

Hopefully I don't sound like a moron. :x

I've written an annoyingly long essay, with Elizabeth's role as an essential part of my reading of the game; it's supposed to appear at Berfrois.com, but hasn't yet. I'll let you know.

My reading of the game is that Elizabeth's role as a "tool" is deeply meaningful, worked out as a commentary on patriarchy. Both Comstock and Booker are trapped by their self-involvement, their inability to see her as anything more than a means to an end (for Booker, as a way to redeem his gambling debt; for Comstock, as an "heir"). The only possible redemption, which only comes about at the end of the story, is Booker's willingness to start seeing her as a unique individual, to make her goals and her well-being a priority apart from his own.

It's got a lot to do with the role of the female as the universal Other; the full argument goes a lot deeper. Maybe it'll open up a different dimension of her character to you if you ever get to read it. In the meantime, glad to hear your perspective on Elizabeth, and I hope to read more of your work in the future!

Oh you should definitely play it! But I wouldn't consider her passive at all! She works and lives outside the system, is amazingly athletic, and risks her life to save her sister. She also doesn't take any crap from the (male) villains of the game. Plus, the game is first person, and it's not often you're asked to take the perspective of a female character.

I loved your article! Hurray for shameless plugging. I wish that Elizabeth was given the chance to be the character she had the potential for, but I 100% agree with you when you say that this is Booker's story and she is just another piece to the puzzle. Her contribution to the game would have been the same with or without her being present as the AI because she is so passive during gameplay. Thanks for the comment! :)

I agree, it is very difficult to actually measure what makes a good female character in a sea of such bad ones. We see a woman placed in a hierarchy that places her ahead of some male roles and want to jump very quickly to say that she's empowered and a great female role model. Unfortunately, we still have a long ways to go in that department!

Hear, hear. To be honest I'm not quite sure why people are praising her as a character, as if she brought anything new to the table or was in any way particularly inventive. Perhaps it's cynical of me but I can only assume it's because they have bought into the hype of Infinite's marketing.

I think a much more appropriate lay to claim of the Elizabeth-icon folks have fooled themselves into believing is Trip, from Enslaved. To that end, here's my shameless plug of a piece I wrote last week:

http://www.gameranx.com/features/id/14430/article/bioshock-infinite-elizabeth-on-the-back/

I examined Liz's role in terms of priority to the narrative rather than the qualities of her character or as an AI, so I quite enjoyed your reading of her. Nice to know I'm not the only one miffed by the topic :)

I'd have to concur, she's absolutely fabulous as an A.I. companion and I hope games made in the future follow what they did right there. But I wouldn't put her up as exemplary female character. Though with so many really bad ones it doesn't take much to separate yourself from the pack.

I tried to play Mirror's Edge but I was so horrible at it I gave up. :(

I just picked up the game today a la my GameStop birthday treat and I'm looking forward to playing it. Everyone seems to be loving it in my circles, but I'll have to pay close attention to Elizabeth.

Can I just say that I love Faith from Mirror's Edge? I think she's one of the most empowering female game characters I've encountered, despite the fact that the game was short (and I did read the prequel comics too, so I know a little more about her character than most gamers). Hm this might make an interesting article...

I have to say that when I originally found out that Red had no voice, in the beginning at least, I was disappointed. The YouTube comments on the trailer started the, "I wish it was a male character, and they should have given you an option to chose between genders" wars, which I decided to stay away from this time. The skeptic in me immediately pondered if the developers knew that would be a possible reaction, and were placating the male fan base in some way by making her mute and having a male narrator. On the other hand did they even realize the implications of not giving her a voice. After all Bastion contained a similar style of storytelling and the voice acting of Cunningham is superb; perhaps they are only trying to imitate that success.

Silence in male characters often represent toughness and wisdom, but the problem still remains that her silence is not by choice. Even in the Little Mermaid Ariel makes the bargain to trade her voice to be human, even more problematic but her choice. What I hope for and has maintained my level of OMG-female-protagonist is the metaphor that could play out in Red's journey. They have the potential of presenting a major struggle for women. A female carrying a heavy burden who has to fight to find her voice in a world that has taken it, something I haven't seen in video game, and I think it hits particularly close to home for a lot of women, but only if the narrative does it justice. Maybe I want to read too deep into the possibility from my desire for a strong female protagonist, but I hope in this case the simplest answer is incorrect. I look forward to playing it to find out, and to you ladies breaking it down.

The only one I can think of that might fit like them is Blue Dragon, but I can't remember if it's only cut scenes that have voice acting or not. I think it'll be hard to find a match as good as Ni No Kuni. lol

I'm a 4-games out gamefly user, so I always have a bunch to play. But this weekend I'll probably be playing Lego:Lord of the Rings and Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts. With maybe some Tomb Raider and Dead Space 3 thrown in. And always grinding some Black Ops 2 matches.

Not really liking this Lego as much as the others. I think it loses some of its charm when they talk instead of acting the dialog out.

Can't play any Ni No Kuni though, broke my controller, stupid temper. -.-

Have a great weekend. ^-^

Another fantastic podcast, interesting and hilarious. :D Lots of great ideas for raising a child. Thinking on languages/knowledge, I work at my family's computer store and I'm always surprised how many people treat their computer like it has the plague. You definitely get that more from older ones but even some younger ones. Though some times you get the ones who know to much and think they know more then you. XD Again great interview. More plzzz! :O

I've never much liked Zynga, and from that they don't sound like a place I'd like to work. You would think that if they did have another document covering harassment polices this one would reference it at some point, maybe? Though I may be bitter about then ending Vampire Wars, I spent way too much on that game. lol

I agree that games that ask you to strategize are great for getting children to learn some critical thinking skills early, but I am worried about giving mature content to children too soon. I have been able to do the same with some of the Lego games and Ni No Kuni with Pea. Kids have enough to deal with, IMHO, without giving them graphic violence at that age...and there is less risk of them getting kicked out of school for depicting gun violence. I'm just saying.

I have yet to play the new Tomb Raider, but I found your argument about what makes a positive female protagonist interesting, and it made me want to pick up the game. The last female protagonist that I felt was competent and not a bro skin appeared in Suikoden III, but that was released in 2002, so it has been a while. Transistor, by Supergiant looks to be a promising addition to strong, positive female protagonists, and I am super excited. Do you ladies know of any upcoming independent or big release games with female protagonists? By the way I love your podcast. :)

Copying from FB, with additions: There is that whole thing about how I let my son play Left 4 Dead 1&2 when he was 4, ma'am. We always either played with him or sat next to him while he played to help and answer questions and make sure he wasn't shooting his teammates. It's the game he's loved the most and that has held his attention the most. He'd always wanted to play games and never really had the patience or attention span until he came upon us one night, when he was supposed to be in bed, split-screening. We let him watch for a few minutes and explained the happenings. He was already a monster-obsessed kid. It was a natural thing for him to love.

We played with him and watched him develop from a child with a VERY short attention span into a smarter and more focused little man. He learned to strategize and cooperate better (rough for only children) and his general motor skills improved, too. I'm a big believer in the therapeutic qualities of gaming and I think it helped.

He likes others, but nothing like that. I can't think of a single game he's ever played without either Momma or Terry at his side, and even if a game isn't co-op, he sits with us when we play, too (if it's a game we'll let him watch) and "helps." But he has not focused on anything like he did L4D. I think it was the stakes -- he didn't want to be crushed by zombies. He likes Lego Star Wars, for instance, but all that happens there if you don't play hard is you flutter out and get rebuilt. Jack hated going down in L4D and would work to stay on his feet. It gave him the motive that other games didn't.

Certainly, it's a violent game. They swear. And we're really careful about his media consumption in all other ways, which is why we were always with him, so we could remark on the language or the violence. We bought him a stuff Tank from the official store, which is silly and purple and makes amazing sounds, just to lessen the realism factor. We explain what's real and what isn't and he seems to understand. I know it seems controversial to let a four year old play a game like this, but for our family, it was a great decision and I'd do it again. I just hope we find another game he loves as much, because he's outgrown it now and I miss spending Saturday mornings snuggled up with my little man and a couple of Xbox controllers! We still play, but not as much. The last game we enjoyed as much together was Limbo, though I had to turn off the deaths... not so much for him but for me!

My analysis part is specifically focusing on publicly available corporate policies, but I could definitely use that for showing a possible link between the policy and the behavior. As Blizzard seems it is unimportant to protect their employees from harassment or even pretend to be open minded, it doesn't surprise me that they stifle players who want to do things like create safe spaces. If you have any sources on this, definitely shoot them my way. I've been struggling with how to end each analysis, and a nice (horrible) anecdote might be just the thing. Thanks Don!

While it may not pertain directly to what you're doing in your thesis, it might be interesting to compare and contrast this code of conduct to how Blizzard deals with race, gender, sexual orientation, etc. outside the company. One good example with lots of documentation might be when Blizzard reprimanded guilds for openly recruiting LGBT members. Guilds like Stonewall Champions and Spreading Taint on the Proudmore server were punished fro violating the WoW EULA by even advertising sexual orientation as a criteria (in a sort of reverse discrimination policy). So for all the homophobic banter in the game, this incident remains one of the most highly publicized instances where Blizzard took any position on game play and sexual orientation in relation to its customers.

Just an idea of how these things get enacted in the public, not sure how you'd find out what happens internally without risking someone's job.

I'm kind of with you on this one. I'm not a fan of images of women who look like they've been battered. Maybe something more mystical considering the actual subject matter of the game. On a whole I am in favor of fewer guns and ultra violent images on game covers because the are so prominently placed in stores and little ones like Pea see them. For this reason, I try to make sure that (if we do look at games together) that she doesn't see anything to violent by keeping her close at hand, usually in the kids' games aisle, and having the person working bring me games. This cuts down on impulse buys, which is good for me and bad for them. At home we even have some games that are put out of reach or have paper taped over the overs (ZombiU was the latest offender) because they are so visually disturbing. I'm sure that I'm not the only parent has to be careful of this.

Judging from the cover alone I'd say it looks like a survival horror, or maybe an adventure game - that would be my guess anyway.

Personally, I don't find it all that appealing, I mean she's scratched-up with her eyes closed and she's running away from something (I think). Maybe if I was more of a horror fan I'd like it.

When I was a teen I was drawn to the first TLJ game based on the front the cover. I read the blurb before buying of course, but the protagonist on the front looks mysterious without being dis-empowered.

Thanks Opaline!

You're definitely right, we discussed this a little more thoroughly in one of our podcast episodes about the Ripley effect! The whole time I'm playing FemShep I can tell that she is just a female built over a character that is meant to be male. The really sad thing is even with that burning thought in your mind she happens to be one of the best female protagonists of the one's out there.

I haven't played Persona 3 Portable, but that is more than enough reason for me to try it out! I'd love to see 'Remember Me' turn out well, but to be totally honest I don't trust Capcom with a whole lot that involves women as of late. Let's hope that I'm wrong! Beyond: Two Souls looks promising as well!

I completely agree Nicole, great article!

Sometimes even when the option exists to play as female, the story, writing, or even sometimes the animation is done with a male protagonist in mind.

There were a few parts in Saints Row the Third where my protagonist was referred to as a him. In Morrowind this happened frequently as well, and femshep in ME2 walks and sits rather awkwardly.

A game that did a great job of the optional female protagonist is Persona 3 Portable though. That one was excellent as the conversations and many social events were altered and re-written specifically for a female character.

I'm hopeful that Capcom's 'Remember Me' turns out well, since Nilin seems reasonably cool so far.

The hardest thing for me is letting go of my perfectionism when I play games with my kids. I have to find a balance between letting them play their way (they like to rush through the levels and get done as fast as possible) and teaching them to play the way I like to play (trying to get all achievements and really "completing" the game). The co-op play on the Lego games is an excellent example. Slow down, find the goodies. It's not a race. And don't even get me started about how I can get when playing games like Animal Crossing. Yes, I want the town to be perfect, and I want the museum to have all the bugs and all the fish, and I want every piece of furniture in a collection.

Thanks for the comment because I think you pointed out the exact reason why I wrote this article. My intention was never to dismiss cosplay, but rather to celebrate the women that are able to rise above the sexism of the industry and the booth babe mentality. My general thought about cosplay having a bad reputation amongst self-respecting women was made because I feel most women see these sites celebrating the "slutty" cosplays (such as <a href="http://hotsexycosplay.tumblr.com/" rel="nofollow">Hot Sexy Cosplay</a> or <a href="http://weknowmemes.com/2012/07/25-sexiest-cosplay-photos-from-comic-con-2012/" rel="nofollow">25 Sexiest Cosplay Photos</a>) and are unable to see past them because there aren't as many medias celebrating the women who make an effort to cosplay in a less "slutty" manner.

I believe I tried to write to exactly what you just said. There are many people (men and women) who cosplay in awesome ways and I want young girls and any aged women to see that when they cosplay they don't need to fall prey to the idea that they need to "sexify" an already over-sexualized character just to get attention.

My general thought about cosplay having a bad reputation amongst self-respecting women was made because I feel most women see these sites celebrating the “slutty” cosplays (such as Hot Sexy Cosplay or 25 Sexiest Cosplay Photos) and are unable to see past them because there aren’t as many medias celebrating the women who make an effort to cosplay in a less “slutty” manner.

I believe I tried to write to exactly what you just said. There are many people (men and women) who cosplay in awesome ways and I want young girls and any aged women to see that when they cosplay they don’t need to fall prey to the idea that they need to “sexify” an already over-sexualized character just to get attention.

"Cosplay has a pretty bad reputation amongst self-respecting women" is pretty inflammatory language and reeks of the same language being used in recent arguments looking for "authenticity" in gamer girls. There's great cosplay communities around game/anime conventions, and many fans (both women and men) spend a lot of time and effort into putting their costumes together. It seems disingenuous to knock down those fans for celebrating geek culture just because some fans use cosplay as an excuse to dress provocatively.
Most cosplayers put their own spin on a costume, and cosplaying women face already tough source material (as you mention) alongside more outcry if their costume isn't accurate enough (fake gamer girl can't even get Samus' suit right!) But their efforts help push actual good female game characters to the forefront because cosplayers like dressing up as the characters they like.
So I would caution against dismissing the cosplay side of fandom and the women and men who make it up. There's a lot of great fans there that are pushing against the sexism of the industry and booth babe mentality that used to be the face of people dressing up at video game cons.

#1reasonwhy I struggle as an academic gamer is because my dissertation committee made me cut gaming studies from my dissertation.

#1reasonwhy I struggle as an academic studying games is when I told a colleague that's what I do (and it's what he does too) he said "YOU? REALLY?" like it was the strangest thing in the world. This response is not uncommon.

#1reasonwhy I feel like I don't belong is that I don't play the "right" games and I don't even care to. The "right" games seem to be set by the industry and media, neither of which--I feel--represent me very well. I tried Skyrim, I did, and I'm finally "good enough" at WoW, but most of the time I'd rather be playing Skylanders and LittleBigPlanet, and I still love the Rabbids and <3 retro-gaming....
