Open Letter from NYMG to the Broader Games Community

Hey, welcome to our community. You have definitely figured out by now that we are feminists, but I would argue five distinctly different kinds of feminists. Women that have been shaped by our personal, educational, and professional experiences just like everyone else. And for that reason we welcome everyone into our community. Even (and especially) folks that disagree with us because we so often disagree with one another to some extent. We recognize that it is only through this disagreement and the conversations and knowledge building that comes out of it that we come to a better understanding of one another as HUMAN BEINGS and that this understanding in the first step to making our gaming community stronger and even more awesome.

Yes, we critique and criticize games, gamers, and the gaming community but that it not because we hate it or them. Quite the contrary, we do it because we love games, gamers, and our gaming community (the community that we all belong to). Hell you have to love something to dedicate the kind of time to it that we do. We do this uncompensated. No ads, no sponsors, no anything (though we will take anything folks wanna toss at us). We pay for our own hosting, equipment, games, consoles, you name it. We do this at the cost of time that we could be spending studying, reading, playing with our children, and GAMING. We have a serious love for the community and for you as a part of that community. Now that doesn’t mean that along the way some feathers won’t get ruffled and words will get flung around that we (possibly) wish that we could take back, but that is a part of what family is. Right?

So, welcome. Even if you think that we are totally full of shit we welcome you. All that we ask is that you treat us with respect and add to the conversation and we will continue to grow as a community. As always, my friends, Game On!
